I read this blog [link] a friend of mine wrote about paper clay and I decided to try it for myself. I thought this was the perfect opportunity.His core is made of tin foil and his legs have wire supports. There is also a tiny magnet in his foot. The paper clay is very light and I liked that it was easy to sand.

I enjoyed working on this guy so I might do some more sculptures in the future!

Gears of War 3 Contest

Exciting news everyone! Richard and I were selected as a semifinalist in the Gears of War 3 desktop background contest over on Deviantart. Which means they are going to send us some money and a copy of the game!

It was a collaborative piece. We both brainstormed the concept and created thumb nail sketches together. Richard did the pencils, I did the inking (with no help from Oliver our kitten), he then colored it in the computer and I provided the textures.

Day of the Dead Post Card Competition

This was my submission to the Day of the Dead Post Card Competition held by the Minnesota Center for Book Arts.

I wanted experiment with some new techniques on this. After Mr. Bury gave such a raving review of paper clay I decided to try it out. I built up his face with the clay, sanded it and then painted it with acrylic paint. The background is painted with india ink and the speech bubble is a black paper cut out.

I haven't had a chance to see the show yet but in this picture from the Mill City Times you can see my piece! If you follow that link you can also see more submissions from this show.

Polaroid Camer Lino Cut

Remember my Polaroid drawing I did earlier this year? Well I decided to create a linocut based on that image.

First I transfered my drawing onto a Master Carve block with tracing paper.

Then I carved out the design. Our new Kitten Oliver likes to sit on my desk and "help" me work.

Baby Jones and Other Onesies

Some onesies I gave to my good friend Lizzy for her new baby girl! I actually made the Baby Jones one a couple years ago (Based on the infamous Davy Jones of Pirates of the Caribbean) . The two on the bottom are new. I cut a sticker stencil of the rat and elephant and then sprayed them with non-toxic spray dye.

Marbled Paper

Guess who has been experimenting with marbled paper?

Marbled paper is created by floating ink on a thick liquid called size. You draw and push around the ink until a pattern you like emerges then you transfer it to paper or other surfaces if you like!

This one the ink has been transferred to black paper.

New Work Bench

This is the new work bench I have been working on for the past month. I bought a used flat file on Ebay and then my Dad and I built the work bench around it. I got the counter top made with a hole in it to facilitate a light box. Richard and I put the final coat of varnish on it Tuesday and we installed it yesterday!

I have been struggling to get some drawing time in now that I'm literally working four part time jobs. So I have been trying to doodle during my lunch breaks on these post it notes. Then I have been finishing them at home.

My Waterloo Days is an annual festival here in Waterloo Iowa to celebrate Waterloo's cultural and recreational opportunities and every year my mom's school, Kittrell Elementary, participates in the parade. The theme for this year is Party 'Loo Style and the parade committee for this year only consisted of my mom (Linda Harris), Richard and I so we made a dragon. How do you make a dragon you say?

Well let me show you.

We started by looking up some reference on google of traditional chinese dragons and lions and then I made some sketches of how we generally wanted it to look.

The next thing we did was wander around the hardware store and find dragon supplies. We ended up with zip ties, hula hoops, garden sprinkler hose, and an exercise ball.

We did many paper mache layers.

We built up his eyes with news paper and then covered it in model magic.

I hope everyone had a good Easter weekend! These are the decorations I created for Richard's apartment mantle. The grass panels are made out of masonite with darker paper accents and each pair is attached in the middle with small hinges. The eggs I paper mached with lokta paper and the bunny I just sprayed white and gave him new eyes and bow. You can also see Kingston in the corner of the first picture along with our Easter baskets!

Turtle Knight Art Trade

Yesterday was Richard's birthday and this is the card I gave him this year. He designed a turtle knight and a mouse page during our junior year character design class and this is my version of his characters. The Rabbit King I designed before fits into their world as well.

I colored the two characters and their branch first with markers on cold press watercolor paper. I knew I wanted the background to be less saturated so the focus would be on the characters so I painted layers of watercolor washes on hot press watercolor paper to create the hills and then did the detailing in colored pencils. The landscape is a sort of combination of the green Scottish country side and my home state of Iowa. I also exaggerated the hill the castle is on from the original drawing.

Exacto Tip

Hey guys, I just wanted to post a simple idea that I came up with the other day for those of you that use exacto blades. I go through a lot of exacto blades while doing projects because I replace them the minute the little tip breaks off. I am always hesitant to through them away because I don't want them to accidentally get on the floor. I read somewhere that you could dispose of them in an empty pop can but I didn't want to have a pop can full of exacto blades sitting on my desk. When my brother went back to college after winter break he left an empty Tic Tac container on the table and I thought perfect! It is clear, compact, and has a snap close lid. I added a little decoration to mine but that is optional.

After completing my first year in the KCAI Animation department with all my extremely talented, creative classmates and professors I thought to myself, it would be awesome if I somehow could have a book full of everyones awesome art.

I guess I was not the only one to think that because only a year later my friend Evan Tedlock spear headed an operation to make it happen. He worked with our Department head Doug Hudson and fellow design classmate Cassie King to created the first Frame by Frame book. They ended up using a design I created previously for the front and inside cover and everyone had three to five pages to showcase their art and a small bio.

Cassie King did the overall design and layout and Doug wrote a lovely forward for us, part of it is below.

This group of seniors is the strongest in spirit to date. Their quality of work, level of ambition, infectious drive and overwhelming sense of togetherness and willingness to help each other has shaped the sixth year of the department’s evolution into its most positive yet.

I love them all, I will miss each of them VERY much and I look forward to relishing in every last bit of their inevitable successes. I hope the world is ready for this bunch, they’re going to leave a huge impression!

One of my assignments at school was to have an artistic conversation with a contemporary artist. My friend Sakari and I decided to work with each other for the assignment but I wasn't real happy with how my half of the conversation turned out. So this is my second conversation and I am much happier with it. It is a paper cut out on a 5x7 wooden panel. She also has an amazing fashion blog you should check out.

The line art for this project kind of reminded me of a reading rainbow poster for some reason.

Christmas is coming and I have to say I'm actually ready this year. Normally I'm up late Christmas Eve working on some last minute gift. I think it is probably because it is the first time I haven't been busy with finals since elementary school. I love the holidays and I love wrapping Christmas gifts! This years paper came from the Container Store and Target. My family also got a new kitten around Thanksgiving. She is a Ragdoll Cat named Luna and she hangs out with me in my studio when she is not in the Christmas tree.

I entered the T2 Will Work for Doughnuts internship competition last friday and today they announced the three finalist, and while my video was not selected, two of the three were KCAI animation alumni. Sunday I was invited to be a part of Sturgis Falls, by a fellow artist Lisa Klenske. She had an art tent this year and asked me if I would like to sell some things too. I didn't have much notice but I did have some earrings and nick nacks hanging around from past conventions so I said sure. And you know I didn't do too bad.

I also made these paper flowers, they have a pin and hair clip back so they can work as a broach or a hair accessory. They are also coated with clear spray paint so they are water resistant.

Happy Father's Day to all the Dad's out there! My parents have been considering getting a new puppy so this is the card I made my dad this year. For a gift I also gave my dad some lawn spray to guard against puppy spots and some bitter spray to stop puppies from chewing things. I gave my mom some chew toys also. I think they were pretty surprised.

The inside of the card said If you decide to get a dog, no matter what kind, you are going to need a couple of things, Happy Father's Day!

I have a triptych of fauxlaroids in the BFA Show! The show was open to all graduating seniors but animation students haven't pursued this very actively in the past because the deadline for the show doesn't line up with the due date of our films.

Exhibition” from April 17 to May 15 at the H&R Block Artspace at KCAI, 16 E. 43rd St. A closing reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 14. In connection with the exhibition, art history and creative writing students will read from “Compendium 2010,” an anthology of their writings and images, at noon Friday, May 14.

With work installed throughout the Artspace — in the main gallery and also on the upper level — this invitational exhibition will include work from all departments at KCAI, including animation, art history, ceramics, creative writing, digital filmmaking, fiber, graphic design, interdisciplinary arts, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.

I have working on a way to stand my puppets upright and this is what I came up with.

The metal arm can extend so this rig can stay out of the shot and I'm going to attach it to a metal base.

For the close up shots I will probably do something different, like hold the puppets from the bottom, this would be mostly for longer shots that involve walking.

Packrats

This stop motion, paper cut out animation is about two rat brothers, Oliver and Clarence, that wake up and start getting ready for a trip. They brush their teeth, get dressed, and pack their bag. Oliver, the younger brother doesn’t know exactly where they are going and imagines what they will need on their trip.
